What Is the Difference Between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

By Beata Webb, Founder & CEO, Pegasus Men’s Wellbeing Centre CIC

Should I see a counsellor or a psychotherapist?” It’s one of the questions we’re asked most often at Pegasus — and the honest answer is that the distinction is less clear-cut than many people expect.

What is counselling?

Counselling is a talking therapy that provides a safe, confidential space to explore difficulties, feelings and experiences with a trained professional. Counselling tends to be focused on the present — on current difficulties and how to navigate them. It is often relatively short-term, typically ranging from six to twenty sessions.

Counselling is particularly effective for:

  • Life transitions — job changes, relationship breakdown, bereavement

  • Anxiety, low mood and stress

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Building self-esteem and confidence

  • Processing a specific difficult experience

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy also involves talking, listening and exploring — but it typically works at a greater depth and over a longer timeframe. Where counselling tends to focus on the present, psychotherapy often explores how past experiences, early relationships and long-standing patterns have shaped who you are.

Psychotherapy is generally more appropriate for:

  • Deep-rooted or longstanding emotional difficulties

  • Trauma — including childhood trauma, abuse or neglect

  • Complex mental health presentations

  • Patterns of behaviour that keep repeating despite efforts to change

  • A desire for more fundamental, lasting change rather than symptom relief

Is one better than the other?

Neither counselling nor psychotherapy is inherently superior. The right choice depends entirely on what you’re bringing to therapy, what you’re hoping to achieve, and what feels right for you.

How does Pegasus approach this distinction?

At Pegasus Men’s Wellbeing Centre CIC, we work in a pluralistic way — which means we don’t rigidly apply a single model or draw a hard line between counselling and psychotherapy. Our practitioners are qualified in both, and we work collaboratively with each client to understand what he needs and adapt our approach accordingly.

What remains constant is the quality of the therapeutic relationship — the trust, the attunement, the genuine care for the person in the room. In our experience, that relationship is the most important ingredient in any successful therapeutic process.

Do I need to decide before I come?

No. When you first contact Pegasus, we’ll have a conversation to understand what’s brought you to therapy and what you’re hoping for. From there, we’ll help you think about what kind of support might suit you best. You don’t need to arrive with the answer. The most important step is simply getting in touch.
